Political Relations
Diplomatic relations between India and Italy were established in 1947. Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru visited Italy in 1953. The first Head of State visit from Italy took place when Italian President Oscar Luigi Scalfaro visited India in February 1995. There has been a regular exchange of high-level visits. Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi paid a visit to India in February 2007 and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh visited Italy for the L'Aquila G8/G5 Summit in July 2009. In June 2011, External Affairs Minister SM Krishna participated in the 150th anniversary celebrations of the Unification of the Republic of Italy in Rome.
